Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome:-

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a serious form of pneumonia.
Infection with the SARS virus causes acute respiratory distress (severe breathing difficulty) and sometimes death.

  • SARS is caused by viruses which belongs to coronaviruses family group.
  • A Coronavirus is a type of virus which causes upper respiratory tract illness.
  • Till now six different types of coronaviruses are known to infect humans, in which four are common and two are rare.
  • SARS is induced by the virus infected by the means of air ,these viruses are generally transmitted by the animals like cats , pigs , dogs  etc...

Body Parts Affected by SARS:-

  • Respiratory tract  :-Damages  alveolar wall  causing edema  which leads to destruction  and fibrosis of hyaline membrane. Macrophagic  or  mixed  cellular  infiltration, multinuclear  giant cells,  atypical reactive  pneumocytes, and vascular injury.
  • Spleen and lymph nodes :- Lymphocyte depletion in spleen and lymph nodes with architectural disruption. Splenic white pulp atrophy.
  • Digestive tract , Intestines:- Depletion of mucosal lymphoid tissue..
  • Kidneys:- acute tubular necrosis, in varying degrees and other nonspecific features.
  • Central nervous system  :-Edema and degeneration of neurons, several neurons.
  • Testes  :- Germ cell destruction, apoptotic spermatogenetic cells.
  • And several other organs affected like adrenal gland , heart , thyroid gland etc

SARS is a Coronavirus.


Symptoms :-

  • Breathing problems especially shortness of breath
  • Fever above 100 degree celcius
  • Dry cough
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Confusions
  • Diarrohea......etc

Prevention from SARS:-

  • Wash hand frequently
  • Use disinfectants to clean floors and rooms to avoid infection
  • Adopt hyeginic practices
  • Handle infected person with proper preventive measures.
