Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease which causes obstruction in airway pathway of lungs which results in breathing problems including shortness of breath.
- The inflammation also causes bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) to a variety of stimulus.
- Inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing , breathlessness ,chest-tightness and coughing problems.
History:-
- Word "Asthma" is a Greek word which means "panting".
- 2000 yrs ago , Hippocrates used the word "Asthma" to describe episodic shortness of breath.
- The first detailed clinical description of the asthmatic patient was made by Aretaeus in the second century.
Asthma patient data:-
- Worldwide :- More than 3 billion people is suffering from asthma worldwide and more than 2.5 lakhs death reported per year due to asthma .
- India :- More than 1.3 billion peoples are suffering from asthma in India. 6% of total children and 2% of total adults in India are suffering from asthma.
- USA :- More than 25 million peoples are suffering from asthma in USA which includes 8.4% of total childrens and 7.7% of total adults of USA.
Symptoms :-
- Wheezing sound
- Chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing
- Difficulty in breathing
- Rise in body temperature
Asthma types :-
- Chronic asthma
- Severe acute asthma
- Exercise induced bronchospam
- Nocturnal asthma

These are class of drugs used to control and treat asthmatic symptoms.
