Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease which causes obstruction in airway pathway of lungs which results in breathing problems including shortness of breath.

  • The inflammation also causes bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) to a variety of stimulus.
  • Inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing , breathlessness ,chest-tightness  and coughing problems.

History:-

  • Word "Asthma" is a Greek word which means "panting".
  • 2000 yrs ago , Hippocrates used the word "Asthma" to describe episodic shortness of breath.
  • The first detailed clinical description of the asthmatic patient was made by Aretaeus in the second century.

Asthma patient data:-

  • Worldwide :- More than 3 billion people is suffering from asthma worldwide  and more than 2.5 lakhs death reported per year due to asthma .
  • India :- More than 1.3 billion peoples are suffering from asthma in India. 6% of total children and 2% of total adults in India are suffering from asthma.
  • USA :- More than 25 million peoples are suffering from asthma in USA which includes 8.4% of total childrens and 7.7% of total adults of USA.

Symptoms :-

  • Wheezing sound
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Rise in body temperature

Asthma types :-

  • Chronic asthma
  • Severe acute asthma
  • Exercise induced bronchospam
  • Nocturnal asthma

Anti-asthma drugs :-

These are class of drugs used to control and treat asthmatic symptoms.
  1. Bronchodiltors
  2. Leukotriene antagonist
  3. Mast cell stabilizer
  4. Corticosteroids
  5. Anti-IGE antibody

Zidovudine (AZT) Zidovudine is an effective anti-viral drug that acts on retroviruses especially human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is not preferred 1st line antiviral drug according to regimen 2016 of WHO.  Zidovudine belongs to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors class of anti-retroviral drugs. The therapeutic dose of zidovudine for adults is 300 mg and 180 mg per meter square for children. Zidovudine is also known as AZT due to its usage as a thymidine analogue. Mechanism of action(MOA):- Zidovudine when administered, get phosphorylation in the host cell and converted into zidovudine triphosphate. The zidovudine triphosphate selectively inhibits viral reverse transcriptase in preference to DNA polymerase. AZT inhibits HIV reverse transcription by replacing thymidine from DNA formed by the reverse transcription process and results in changing of the base sequence of DNA, which makes it an inactive DNA and stops further DNA reverse transcription.
